Nascita di poesia su una civiltà al tramonto: la "Novelle" di Goethe

This thesis aims to explore the anthropological dualism between the impulse toward aggressiveness and the inclination toward art in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Novelle, through a textual analysis. In particular, it examines the manifestation of this tension in the symbolic dichotomy between the practice of hunting and artistic expressions such as painting, poetry, and music. The first part of the study is devoted to the historical and cultural context in which the work was written, to its genesis, and to the poetics of late Goethe, with particular attention to the concepts of Gesellige Bildung (social formation), Distanz (distance), and Ideal (ideal). The central part of the thesis explores the relationship between human beings, art, and nature, highlighting—through an interpretive lens—the dualism between aggressiveness and creativity in the key textual passages in which hunting and art emerge. A third section then revisits the concepts of Geselligkeit (sociability) and Entsagung (renunciation) introduced at the beginning, situating them within a theoretical framework consistent with the work’s conclusion. This section pays particular attention to the emerging contrast between Western and Eastern civilization that concludes the novella and opens a reflection on the cosmic dimension of late Goethe. In conclusion, the thesis highlights the central role of art as a means of sublimating violence: the human propensity for aggressiveness is ideally overcome by the creative force that can guide the individual—and society—toward an ethically and aesthetically elevated dimension.

La presente tesi si propone di approfondire il dualismo antropologico tra impulso all’aggressività e inclinazione all’arte nell’opera "Novelle" di Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, attraverso un’analisi testuale. In particolare, viene esaminata la manifestazione della tensione attraverso la simbolica dicotomia tra la pratica della caccia e le espressioni artistiche, quali la pittura, la poesia e la musica. La prima parte dell'elaborato è dedicata al contesto storico-culturale in cui si inserisce la stesura dell’opera, alla sua genesi e alla poetica del tardo Goethe, con particolare attenzione ai concetti di "Gesellige Bildung" (formazione sociale), "Distanz" (distanza), "Ideal" (ideale). La parte centrale della tesi esplora il rapporto tra uomo, arte e natura, evidenziando, in chiave interpretativa, il dualismo tra aggressività e creatività nei principali passaggi testuali in cui emergono la caccia e l’arte. Segue una terza sezione che riprende i concetti di "Geselligkeit" (socievolezza) ed "Entsagung" (rinuncia) introdotti all’inizio, per inserirli in una cornice teorica coerente con l’esito dell’opera. Tale sezione dedica particolare attenzione al contrasto emergente tra civiltà occidentale e orientale che chiude la novella e apre ad una riflessione sulla dimensione cosmica del tardo Goethe. A conclusione, viene messo in luce il ruolo centrale dell’arte come strumento di sublimazione della violenza: la propensione umana all’aggressività viene superata, idealmente, dalla forza creativa che può guidare l’individuo – e la società – verso una dimensione eticamente ed esteticamente superiore.
