The thesis examines the role of fantastic literature as a privileged space for questioning reality within modernity, highlighting how the genre does not merely introduce marvellous elements, but constructs a border zone in which everyday experience is disrupted and expanded by an additional dimension. The fantastic is presented as a territory of uncertainty, where the reader encounters suspension, hesitation, and the impossibility of reducing events to predetermined rational categories. The analysis focuses in particular on Romanian literature during the communist period, a context in which censorship imposed strict restrictions on artistic and ideological freedom. In this scenario, the fantastic assumed a crucial cultural and political function, becoming an indirect language and a tool of moral resistance. Through metaphors, symbols, and visionary imagery, Romanian writers were able to address themes such as freedom, memory, fear, and human dignity, circumventing the constraints of official discourse and preserving truths that could not be openly expressed. The study also concentrates on the work of Ana Blandiana, a central figure in contemporary Romanian culture, a poet and prose writer who has shaped a literary language in which the fantastic does not represent an escape from reality but rather a means of penetrating it more deeply. Blandiana’s short fiction, developed in the 1970s and 1980s, defines the fantastic as an interference between worlds, a threshold where the real and the unreal do not oppose one another but meet and illuminate each other, revealing new ways of perceiving and interpreting existence.
Lo studio della tesi esamina il ruolo della letteratura fantastica come spazio privilegiato di interrogazione del reale all’interno della modernità, mettendo in luce come il genere non si limiti a introdurre elementi meravigliosi, ma costruisca una zona di confine in cui l’esperienza quotidiana viene perturbata e ampliata da una dimensione ulteriore. Il fantastico è presentato come territorio dell’incertezza, dove il lettore sperimenta sospensione, esitazione e l’impossibilità di ricondurre gli eventi a categorie razionali prestabilite. In particolare, l’analisi si concentra sulla letteratura romena del periodo comunista, contesto in cui la censura determinava severe restrizioni alla libertà artistica e ideologica. In questo scenario, il fantastico ha assunto una funzione culturale e politica decisiva, trasformandosi in linguaggio indiretto e strumento di resistenza morale. Attraverso metafore, simboli e visioni, autori romeni hanno potuto affrontare temi come libertà, memoria, paura e dignità umana, aggirando i vincoli del discorso ufficiale e preservando verità non dicibili apertamente. Lo studio si focalizza inoltre sull’opera di Ana Blandiana, figura centrale della cultura romena contemporanea, poetessa e prosatrice che ha modellato un immaginario narrativo in cui il fantastico non rappresenta evasione, bensì mezzo di approfondimento del reale. La narrativa breve di Blandiana, sviluppata negli anni Settanta e Ottanta, definisce il fantastico come interferenza tra mondi, una soglia in cui reale e irreale non si oppongono, ma si incontrano e si illuminano reciprocamente, rivelando così nuovi modi di percezione e interpretazione dell’esistente.
