Introduction Pain related to cancer is one of the most burdensome challenges that a patient has to face, as it affects not only the body but also the emotional, social, and relational aspects. Its management requires specific skills that go beyond the simple administration of drugs and also include communication and education. The nurse, thanks to his or her continuous presence beside the patient, has a fundamental role in assessment, monitoring, and support, also becoming a point of reference for the family. The thesis aims to explore how nurses evaluate their own preparation and training in the management of pain and in communication with oncology patients and their families. Materials and Methods Through the administration of a questionnaire addressed to nurses working in Medicine, Oncology, and Hospice wards, the aim was to investigate how these professionals perceive their preparation in the management of cancer pain, in psychological support, and in communication with patients and families. The objective of the survey was to understand which skills are put into practice in daily work, what difficulties are encountered, and what needs emerge. Results From the analysis of the questionnaires, a heterogeneous picture emerged, reflecting the complexity and variability of the care settings. Some nurses showed good awareness of their role in the management of pain and communication, while in other cases an expressed need for greater educational support and shared tools was found. There also emerged a growing sensitivity toward the relational and psychological aspects of the oncological process. Discussion These data suggest that it is essential to value and strengthen the role of the nurse in the management of pain and communication in the oncological field, offering continuous training and adequate operational tools. Only through a global taking in charge of the person and the family can care truly centered on the patient be guaranteed.
Introduzione.
