The thesis delves into the social representation of the nursing profession, examining how it is perceived by the population. The main objective is to investigate the perception that citizens have of the social image of the nursing profession, with particular attention to the stereotypes that still exist and the enhancement strategies needed to improve the social recognition of the role. After an introduction describing the context and motivation of the research, the first chapter explores the historical and regulatory background of nursing education, highlighting the process of professionalization and the maturation of identity through laws and codes of ethics. It is emphasized that, despite legislative and educational progress, the public image of nurses is still often distorted and influenced by media representations that depict them as subordinate to doctors and as a stereotypically female figure. The second chapter describes the research methodology: interviews were conducted with the "lay" population from two different geographical areas with the aim of perceiving the nursing image. The third chapter presents the results...(MISSING) The fourth chapter discusses the results in light of the scientific literature. It is emphasized that the formation of professional identity is influenced by social, cultural, and media factors. Stereotypes, still present in films, TV series, and web content, contribute to a distorted view of the profession, which can negatively affect both the self-esteem of nurses and the attractiveness of the career, as well as the appeal for young people to pursue this profession; to this is added an alarming fact: the number of applications to nursing degree courses was lower than the available places. Finally, the fifth chapter concludes that, despite regulatory and educational progress, the nursing profession has not yet bridged the gap between social image and professional identity. To overcome this dichotomy, awareness and communication efforts are needed, both by institutions, the media, and nurses themselves. The cultural revolution must start from within the profession, with nurses who are aware of their own value and able to convey it to society.
