Introduction: Breastfeeding is the ideal form of nutrition for the newborn, offering benefits for both infant and maternal health. Despite recommendations from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, rates of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months remain below global targets. In this context, nurses play a fundamental role in promoting, educating, and providing ongoing support to mothers throughout the birth process. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate, through a literature review, the role of nurses in promoting breastfeeding. Specifically, it aims to explore the educational strategies and skills nurses use to promote and support maternal adherence to breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: A literature review was conducted between May and September 2025, using the PIO methodology to guide the search. The databases consulted included PubMed and institutional websites. The selected articles included systematic reviews, observational studies, and clinical trials. During the search phase, 51 articles were analyzed, of which 22 were eligible according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The review showed that nursing education strategies, both in the prenatal and postnatal periods, promote increased breastfeeding rates, particularly exclusive breastfeeding (only breast milk until the infant is 6 months of age). Interventions such as prenatal education, early skin-to-skin contact, rooming-in, and follow-up programs have proven effective in promoting breastfeeding continuity and maternal trust. Conclusions: The role of the nurse was found to be fundamental in promoting breastfeeding. The multidimensional approach, which integrates clinical, educational, and relational skills, has proven to be the most effective in supporting mothers to breastfeed, even long-term, promoting a positive breastfeeding experience, and contributing to improving mother-infant attachment. Keywords: breastfeeding; nursing role; nursing educational strategies; health education.
