La letteratura inglese accostata alla scrittura creativa: uno studio sperimentale

The main subject of this dissertation concerns the development of high school students’ writing skills, starting from English literature’s topics. This study raises one main question: Is it possible to show to nowadays’ students that foreign literature can also work as a starting point for the improvement of their own linguistic skills? Besides that, another purpose of this thesis is to prove to these same students that there are many ways, different from the canonical ones teachers have always employed in school, in which people can develop their writing skills, and that, therefore, it can become a very interesting and motivating type of exercise. This thesis is divided into four main chapters which deal, respectively, with the reasons that lead to the production of this study, the theoretical knowledge that represents the foundation of the research, the planning of the activity and the analysis and interpretation of the gathered data. This is study is, then, an experimental one, since the above-mentioned hypothesis inevitably required a field investigation in order to be verified. After having clarified some theoretical topics that are fundamental in order to understand the following analysis, such as the development of literature education through time or the definition of creative writing, the experimental study is finally displayed. This research, conducted in a class of a scientific high school in Padova, consisted of seven lessons of one hour each, in which one specific literary topic was explored, which is the novel Robinson Crusoe, written by Daniel Defoe. One important aspect that must be underlined is that the issues covered during the lessons were characterized by the employment of many various and motivating materials, such as PowerPoint presentations, videoclips and websites. At the end of these lessons, a creative writing activity was prepared for the class, which had the function of a written test as well, meaning that it was eventually assessed. Moreover, the students were hand in two different questionnaires, completely anonymous, one to be filled at the beginning and one at the end of the whole project. These two surveys ended up being of great importance for the following data analysis, because the answers given by the pupils worked as a reference to get to more general conclusions. Indeed, we could assert that the present research is a so-called case study, since, starting from a small sample of participants, it acquires results that suit to a much larger slice of population. Furthermore, this study can be also identified as an action research, because one of the goals it aims to is for it to be used in order to try and find a connection between the didactic sphere and the academic research. Finally, in the last chapter the gathered data is analysed and interpreted together with graphs and images, in order to make the analysis more comprehensible to the reader. The conclusions achieved are mostly encouraging. Indeed, the students involved in the investigation reacted in a positive way to the activities and to the materials employed during the lessons. However, the research has also highlighted some problems inherent in the Italian school system and that still need to be solved. Concerning this point, it is possible to affirm that this thesis can turn out to be useful specifically for two categories of people: the first category is that of school educators, who can utilize it as a starting point to keep improving their teaching methods, and the second one is that of academic researchers, who could go further into the specific analysis of all of those topics that appeared to be problematic in this dissertation.

L’oggetto principale di questa ricerca riguarda il potenziamento dell’abilità di writing negli studenti di scuola superiore a partire da argomenti di letteratura inglese. Con questo studio si vuole fondamentalmente sollevare una questione, ovvero ci si chiede se sia possibile dimostrare agli studenti di oggi che la letteratura straniera può fungere anche come punto di partenza per migliorare le proprie skills linguistiche. Oltre a ciò, un ulteriore obiettivo che si pone presente dissertazione è quello di dare prova a tali studenti del fatto che l’abilità di writing può essere sviluppata in modi molti diversi rispetto a quelli canonici a cui sono sempre stati abituati, e quindi diventare anche un tipo di esercizio più interessante e motivante. La struttura della tesi presenta quattro diversi capitoli, riguardanti, rispettivamente, le motivazioni che hanno portato allo sviluppo di tale ricerca, il quadro teorico alla base dell’intero studio, la progettazione dell’attività e un’analisi e interpretazione dei risultati ottenuti. Si tratta, dunque, di uno studio sperimentale, dal momento che le ipotesi di cui sopra richiedevano necessariamente un’indagine su campo per essere verificate. Dopo aver chiarito alcuni argomenti teorici fondamentali per poter comprendere lo studio successivo, quali lo sviluppo della didattica della letteratura o la definizione di scrittura creativa, si passa ad una esposizione dell’indagine sperimentale. Svolta all’interno di una classe quarta di un liceo scientifico di Padova, tale ricerca si compone di sette lezioni da un’ora ciascuna e dedicate a uno specifico argomento di letteratura, ovvero la novella di Robison Crusoe, scritta da Daniel Defoe. È importante evidenziare che i vari argomenti affrontati durante le ore messe a disposizione sono stati caratterizzati dall’impiego di materiali di sussidio molto vari e motivanti per i ragazzi, quali presentazioni PowerPoint, videoclip e siti web. Al termine delle lezioni è stata svolta una verifica scritta, presentata sotto la forma di un’attività di scrittura creativa. Inoltre, agli studenti sono stati sottoposti due diversi questionari, uno all’inizio e uno alla fine dell’intero progetto, da compilare in forma completamente anonima. I sondaggi in questione si sono rivelati uno strumento fondamentale per la successiva analisi dei dati, poiché le risposte da essi ottenute sono servite come riferimento per giungere a delle conclusioni più generalizzabili. Per questo motivo, si può affermare che la presente indagine sia un case study, in quanto, appunto, a partire da un campione ridotto di partecipanti, si è arrivati a ricavare dei risultati che valgono per una fetta di popolazione molto più vasta. Inoltre, questo studio si identifica anche come action research, dal momento che, di fatto, attraverso di esso si cerca di trovare una connessione tra il mondo scolastico e quello della ricerca universitaria. Nell’ultimo capitolo, infine, vengono analizzati e interpretati i dati raccolti, accompagnati da grafici e immagini per renderli più comprensibile al lettore. Le conclusioni ottenute al termine dell’intero progetto sono per lo più positive. Infatti, gli studenti coinvolti nell’indagine hanno reagito in modo complessivamente positivo alle attività proposte e ai materiali impiegati durante le lezioni. Allo stesso tempo, però, la ricerca ha messo in luce alcune problematiche della scuola italiana che necessitano di essere affrontate al più presto. A questo proposito, è possibile asserire che la presente indagine può rivelarsi utile principalmente per due categorie di persone: gli insegnanti scolastici, che possono servirsene per migliorare sempre di più i propri metodi didattici, e i ricercatori universitari, i quali hanno la possibilità, a partire da questo studio, di analizzare ancora più nello specifico le radici che stanno alla base delle problematiche evidenziate.
