The aim of this study is to analyse Philippe Doumenc's reinterpretation of Emma Bovary's fate in his novel Contre-enquête sur la mort d'Emma Bovary (Counter-investigation into the death of Emma Bovary), placing it in the social context of 19th-century France. Based on Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece, Madame Bovary: Mœurs de province (1857), Doumenc offers a critical interpretation of the heroine's journey, questioning the idea of her death as a simple consequence of an individual choice. In Flaubert's novel, Emma appears to be responsible for her own fate through her illusions and decisions. In Doumenc's rewriting, however, the young woman is presented as the victim of an oppressive social system that profoundly limits women's freedom. Her death is no longer the result of suicide, but of murder, a narrative device that allows the author to structure his story in the form of an investigation and to question the collective responsibilities of Yonville's society. The work is divided into three chapters. The first reconstructs the historical and social context of the 19th century, with an emphasis on the status of women. The second analyses the circumstances of Emma's death in Doumenc's novel. The third explores the theme of Bovaryism and the quest for an unattainable ideal of life, questioning its individual and universal dimensions.

Abstract
The third explores the theme of Bovaryism and the quest for an unattainable ideal of life, questioning its individual and universal dimensions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
