This thesis aims to examine the notion of spleen as it emerges in the four poems entitled “Spleen” by Charles Baudelaire, included in “Les Fleurs du Mal” (nos. 75–78). After situating this notion within its historical and literary context, the study focuses on the ways in which Baudelaire constructs a specific representation of time and space in order to convey the condition of spleen, as well as on the role of the poet in relation to this state. The research is based on the comparison of various academic sources related to nineteenth-century French history and literature; in particular, for the analysis of the poetic texts, the works of Thomas Klinkert and Mario Richter have proven to be especially valuable.

Abstract
This thesis aims to examine the notion of spleen as it emerges in the four poems entitled “Spleen” by Charles Baudelaire, included in “Les Fleurs du Mal” (nos. 75–78). After situating this notion within its historical and literary context, the study focuses on the ways in which Baudelaire constructs a specific representation of time and space in order to convey the condition of spleen, as well as on the role of the poet in relation to this state. The research is based on the comparison of various academic sources related to nineteenth-century French history and literature; in particular, for the analysis of the poetic texts, the works of Thomas Klinkert and Mario Richter have proven to be especially valuable.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
