Un realismo condiviso: Steinbeck e il neorealismo letterario italiano

The thesis examines the reception of John Steinbeck in Italy and his influence on the Neorealist movement. The American writer exerted a significant impact on Italian authors of the postwar period, thanks to themes rooted in the social dimension, the representation of marginality, and a “harsh realism” capable of portraying the most difficult human conditions. These elements powerfully entered a cultural climate emerging from the dark years of Fascism, in which Neorealist writers sought new forms of ethical and aesthetic expression. The first part emphasizes the ontological dimension of reception, understood as a process that does not merely transmit a work, but redefines it through cultural, political, and linguistic filters. From this perspective, particular importance is given to the role of publishing houses, which were decisive in the selection, mediation, and dissemination of foreign texts during the Fascist era, when publishing activity constantly had to contend with censorship constraints and strategies of ideological adaptation. Special attention is devoted to the issue of translating Steinbeck’s works, comparing central figures of Italian Neorealism such as Cesare Pavese and Elio Vittorini. The thesis investigates the ideological, political, and stylistic differences among the various translators, highlighting how each sought to imprint their own interpretation of the American author, at times emphasizing his political message, at others underscoring his narrative or symbolic dimension. Finally, the last chapter explores the resonance of Steinbeck’s thought and style in relation to his biographical trajectory. The analysis shows how the American author functioned both as a model and as a catalyst for Italian writers, contributing to the definition of a literary identity that oscillated between social commitment, ethical tension, and the search for new narrative languages.

L’elaborato di tesi analizza la ricezione di John Steinbeck in Italia e la sua influenza sul panorama neorealista. Lo scrittore americano esercitò un impatto significativo sugli autori italiani del secondo dopoguerra, grazie a tematiche radicate nella dimensione sociale, nella rappresentazione della marginalità e in un “realismo crudo” capace di raccontare le condizioni umane più difficili. Questi motivi si inserirono con forza all’interno di una temperie culturale che stava emergendo dagli anni bui del fascismo, dove le “penne” neorealiste cercarono nuove forme di espressione etica ed estetica. Nella prima parte viene posto l’accento sulla dimensione ontologica della ricezione, intesa come processo che non si limita a trasmettere l’opera, ma la ridefinisce attraverso filtri culturali, politici e linguistici. In tale prospettiva, particolare rilievo assumerà il ruolo delle case editrici, decisive nella selezione, mediazione e diffusione di testi stranieri in epoca fascista, quando l’attività editoriale si confrontava costantemente con vincoli censori e strategie di adattamento ideologico. Un’attenzione particolare nella trattazione è rivolta al problema della traduzione delle opere di Steinbeck, nella quale si mettono a confronto figure centrali del neorealismo italiano come Cesare Pavese e Elio Vittorini. La tesi indaga le differenze ideologiche, politiche e stilistiche tra i vari traduttori, evidenziando come ciascuno abbia cercato di imprimere una propria visione dell’autore americano, talvolta accentuandone il messaggio politico, altre volte sottolineandone la dimensione narrativa o simbolica. Infine, nell’ultimo capitolo si approfondisce la risonanza del pensiero e dello stile di Steinbeck in relazione al suo percorso biografico. L’analisi mostra come l’autore americano sia stato al tempo stesso modello e catalizzatore per gli scrittori italiani, contribuendo a definire un’identità letteraria che oscillava tra impegno sociale, tensione etica e ricerca di nuovi linguaggi narrativi.
