L’emigrazione italiana in Argentina e la sua rappresentazione nell’opera di Antonio Dal Masetto

This thesis explores the phenomenon of Italian emigration to Argentina, examining the historical, social, and cultural dynamics that shaped the identity of millions of migrants. The first chapter presents the historical and political context that fueled the waves of migration from Italy to the South American country between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular attention to the economic conditions and the social consequences that marked the emigrants’ experience. It also highlights the cultural influence Italians exerted on Argentine society and introduces Antonio Dal Masetto, an Italo-Argentine writer whose personal migratory background deeply shaped his literary production. The second chapter focuses on three of his most representative narrative works: La tierra incomparable, Siempre es difícil volver a casa, and Hay unos tipos abajo. Each text highlights key themes such as cultural adaptation, the bond with both the homeland and the host land, nostalgia, the sense of belonging, and the socio-economic challenges faced by immigrants. The third chapter centers on Oscuramente fuerte es la vida, a novel that reflects the connection between migration, memory, the search for cultural identity, and family roots. Overall, the thesis shows how Dal Masetto’s work offers valuable insight into the Italian migratory experience in Argentina and into the dialogue between literature and history.

Questa tesi esplora il fenomeno dell’emigrazione italiana verso l’Argentina, analizzandone le dinamiche storiche, sociali e culturali che hanno contribuito a plasmare l’identità di milioni di migranti. Nel primo capitolo viene presentato il contesto storico e politico che ha favorito le ondate migratorie dall’Italia al Paese sudamericano tra XIX e XX secolo, con un’attenzione particolare alle condizioni economiche e alle conseguenze sociali che hanno caratterizzato l’esperienza degli emigranti. Si approfondisce inoltre l’influenza culturale esercitata dagli italiani sul tessuto argentino e si introduce la figura di Antonio Dal Masetto, autore italo-argentino la cui esperienza migratoria personale è stata fondamentale per la sua produzione letteraria. Il secondo capitolo analizza tre delle sue opere narrative più rappresentative: La tierra incomparable, Siempre es difícil volver a casa e Hay unos tipos abajo. In ciascun testo vengono messi in luce i temi dell’adattamento culturale, del legame con la terra d’origine e d’accoglienza, della nostalgia, del senso di appartenenza e delle difficoltà socio-economiche affrontate dagli immigrati. Nel terzo capitolo l’attenzione si concentra su Oscuramente fuerte es la vida, romanzo che riflette il rapporto tra migrazione, memoria, ricerca di identità culturale e radici familiari. L’analisi complessiva mostra come l’opera di Dal Masetto offra un prezioso contributo alla comprensione dell’esperienza migratoria italiana in Argentina e al dialogo tra letteratura e storia.
