This thesis explores the representation of race in Shakespeare’s Othello, situating the play within the historical, cultural, and religious context of the Renaissance. Rather than approaching race as a fixed biological category or through notions of race that belong to our own time, the study examines how religious difference, cultural and national anxieties, physical stereotypes, and medieval legacies play a fundamental role in the racialisation of Othello. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how Shakespeare stages society’s concerns and contradictions, showing how dominant groups exercise power in defining the marginalisation of the ‘other’. Through this analysis, the study highlights how Othello dramatizes racial thinking as a social and cultural process.

Abstract
This thesis explores the representation of race in Shakespeare’s Othello, situating the play within the historical, cultural, and religious context of the Renaissance. Rather than approaching race as a fixed biological category or through notions of race that belong to our own time, the study examines how religious difference, cultural and national anxieties, physical stereotypes, and medieval legacies play a fundamental role in the racialisation of Othello. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how Shakespeare stages society’s concerns and contradictions, showing how dominant groups exercise power in defining the marginalisation of the ‘other’. Through this analysis, the study highlights how Othello dramatizes racial thinking as a social and cultural process.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
