This study examines the possible influence of Islamic eschatological tradition on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, starting from the thesis formulated by Miguel Asín Palacios in 1919. In particular, the analysis compares Dante’s Inferno with Risālat al-ghufrān (The epistle of forgiveness) by Abū l-'Alā' al-Ma'arrī, a work that reworks the Islamic account of the night journey and the ascension of the prophet Muhammad. Through an examination of the religious context, narrative structures and representations of the afterlife, the study highlights similarities and differences between the two works. Finally, it addresses the issue of cultural transmission and the possible existence of an intermediary source, assessing whether the similarities are the result of direct influences or of universal conceptions of the afterlife, thereby contributing to reflections on intercultural dynamics in medieval literature.

Abstract
Finally, it addresses the issue of cultural transmission and the possible existence of an intermediary source, assessing whether the similarities are the result of direct influences or of universal conceptions of the afterlife, thereby contributing to reflections on intercultural dynamics in medieval literature.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
