Lateralizzazione delle abilità numerico-ordinali nel pulcino domestico (Gallus gallus)

This study further investigated hemispheric lateralization in domestic chicks (Gallus gallus), observing how these process ordinal information in absence of spatial ones. The chicks (that have passed the training test) underwent the test (binocular sagittal test, binocular fronto-parallel test, left monocular and right monocular test). In addition to observing the percentage with which the subjects pecked the target bin, in the last three test the direction of approach was also observed. The results support the existence of the mental number line even in these non-human animals.

Con questo studio si è andati ad indagare ulteriormente la lateralizzazione emisferica nei pulcini di pollo domestico (Gallus gallus), osservando come questi, in assenza di informazioni spaziali, processino quelle ordinali. Una volta addestrati e superato il training test, i pulcini affrontavano i test veri e propri (test sagittale binoculare, test fronto-parallelo binoculare, monoculare sinistro e monoculare destro). Oltre ad osservare con quale percentuale i soggetti beccassero il contenitore target (il quarto), negli ultimi tre test si è osservata anche la direzione di approccio rispetto alla serie di dieci contenitori. I risultati supportano l'esistenza della linea numerica mentale anche in questi animali non umani.
