The thesis “Monitoring of infrastructures through optical fibers” analyzes the use of optical fibers as sensors for the structural monitoring of civil infrastructures, with particular reference to bridges. The objective of this work is to highlight how a technology originally developed for signal transmission can be effectively used to assess the structural health of infrastructure assets, establishing a connection between the physical principles of optical signal propagation and applications in civil engineering. In the first part, the physical principles underlying signal transmission in optical fibers and the mechanisms that enable their use as sensors are illustrated, with reference to the main measurement techniques. Subsequently, several practical applications of structural monitoring are analyzed, considering bridges as the reference infrastructure. The study highlights the potential of optical fibers in terms of accuracy, measurement continuity, and durability, emphasizing their growing role in the monitoring of modern infrastructures.

Abstract
The study highlights the potential of optical fibers in terms of accuracy, measurement continuity, and durability, emphasizing their growing role in the monitoring of modern infrastructures.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
