This dissertation analyzes the role of education as a tool for emancipation and a fundamental human right, examining the contribution of the critical pedagogies of Paulo Freire and bell hooks to the evolution of the universal right to education. The work begins with Freire's thought and the emergence of the pedagogy of the oppressed, conceived as a response to social inequalities and educational exclusion, and grounded in the idea of education as a political practice oriented toward the liberation of oppressed individuals and groups. The second chapter is dedicated to the thought of bell hooks, analyzed in critical continuity with Freire, with particular attention to the inclusion of gender, race, and non-discrimination. The core of the dissertation examines education as a fundamental human right in the main international legal instruments, interpreting it in a substantive rather than merely formal sense. In conclusion, the paper offers a reflection on the practical implications of emancipatory education, providing concrete examples of how schools, governments, and various organizations can act to make education an emancipatory, inclusive, and democratic practice, thus creating students who can imagine better worlds.
