This dissertation analyzes the relationship between religion and power within mafia organizations, with a particular focus on the 'Ndrangheta. The aim is to understand how symbols, rituals, and religious references are used not as expressions of faith, but as tools of legitimacy, control, and internal cohesion. The first part presents the main sociological theories of religion, particularly those of Durkheim, Weber, and Girard, which offer an interpretative framework useful for explaining the social function of religion and the sacred. The second part applies these theoretical categories to the study of the Mafia, highlighting how the 'Ndrangheta develops its own parallel form of religiosity, based on oaths, affiliation rituals, and sacralized symbols that strengthen the group's identity and justify its internal order. Through the analysis of documents, testimonies, and ecclesiastical interventions, the dissertation also highlights the diverse reactions and transformations of the Catholic Church, which has undergone alternating phases of silence, ambiguity, and rupture. The work highlights the cultural and symbolic dimension of the mafia phenomenon, highlighting how religion, reinterpreted and manipulated, can become an instrument of power and a structural element of mafia identity.
