La ricostruzione della Reichswehr in epoca di Weimar

This thesis aims to investigate the reconstruction of the German army (Reichswehr) during the Weimar Republic. Following the defeat in the Great War, the German armed forces were drastically limited by the Treaty of Versailles in terms of both manpower and weaponry, leaving Germany defenseless in the face of any potential external aggression. The Prussian military elite, which had survived the upheavals of the Novemberrevolution, spent the years of the Republic in a continuous effort to circumvent the disarmament clauses imposed by the Allied powers. Under the material and spiritual leadership of General Hans von Seeckt, the Reichswehr underwent an intense phase of reform concerning its doctrine and internal structure, which transformed it into an elite military force, highly professional and ready to serve as the core of a future expanded army. Furthermore, the secret cooperation initiated by Germany with the Soviet Union and other neutral countries led to the creation of a vast European network of illegal activities. This network played a decisive role in preserving German military know-how and in training specialized personnel in the fields of armored and aerial warfare. The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the fundamental impact of the Reichswehr’s clandestine activities on the subsequent military expansion carried out during the Third Reich. Without the crucial work accomplished during the Weimar years, Adolf Hitler would have been incapable of launching his wars of aggression just six years after seizing power.

Il presente elaborato si pone lo scopo di indagare le vicende che riguardarono la ricostruzione dell'esercito tedesco (Reichswehr) durante l'epoca di Weimar. Dopo la sconfitta nella Grande Guerra, le forze armate tedesche furono limitate dal Trattato di Versailles dal punto di vista degli effettivi e degli armamenti, rendendo la Germania inerme di fronte alla prospettiva di un'aggressione esterna. La casta militare prussiana, sopravvissuta all'impeto della Novemberrevolution, trascorse gli anni della Repubblica nel continuo tentativo di aggirare le clausole di disarmo imposte dalle potenze dell'Intesa. Sotto la guida materiale e spirituale del generale Hans von Seeckt, la Reichswehr attraversò un'intensa fase di riforma della propria dottrina e struttura interna, che la portò a trasformarsi in una forza militare d'élite, altamente professionale e pronta a fungere da nucleo per il futuro esercito espanso. Inoltre, la collaborazione segreta avviata dalla Germania con l'Unione Sovietica e altri paesi neutrali portò alla costruzione di una fitta rete europea di attività illegali, che contribuì in maniera decisiva a mantenere in vita il know-how militare tedesco e ad addestrare personale specializzato negli ambiti della guerra aerea e corazzata. L'obiettivo della tesi è quello di dimostrare l'impatto fondamentale delle attività clandestine della Reichswehr sulla successiva espansione degli armamenti avvenuta durante il Terzo Reich. Senza il prezioso lavoro svolto negli anni di Weimar, Adolf Hitler sarebbe stato incapace di lanciare le sue guerre d'aggressione a solo sei anni dalla conquista del potere.
