This thesis analyzes the role of football as a soft power tool in international relations, focusing on the case of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Through global sporting events, states can enhance their international image, increase visibility, and influence external perceptions without using coercive means. The study is framed within the theoretical debate on soft power and sport diplomacy, examining how Qatar used the World Cup as a strategy of international projection. The research combines a theoretical analysis with an examination of Qatar’s political, economic, and social context, paying particular attention to criticisms related to human rights, labor conditions, and sustainability. The thesis concludes by assessing the effectiveness of football as a soft power instrument, highlighting both its opportunities and limitations in the long term.
