The thesis analyses the role of the media in the representation of gender-based violence, with particular attention to the language, images and narrative structures used in journalistic reporting. Starting from the assumption that violence against women is not a private phenomenon but a social and cultural problem, the research investigates how the media can contribute both to the reproduction of gender stereotypes and secondary victimisation, and to the promotion of greater collective awareness. The analysis is developed through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates legal, sociological and communicative perspectives. After a theoretical and normative review of gender-based violence, with reference to the main definitions, socio-cultural causes and national and international legislative instruments, the thesis explores the ways in which the media construct public discourse on violence against women. Finally, an empirical case study on the femicide of Giulia Cecchettin is presented, through the analysis of press articles, headlines and images, in order to assess the adherence of media coverage to the principles of ethical and responsible communication. The results highlight the critical issues and potential of the media in combating gender-based violence, emphasising the need for more conscious, respectful and culturally oriented communication practices.
