Additive manufacturing (AM) is an innovative production technology that, through the layer-by-layer deposition of material, enables the creation of components with complex geometries and a significant reduction in material waste. In powder-bed processes such as DED and EBM, the quality of the process and the final component depends heavily on the powder used and its key characteristics, such as morphology, particle size distribution, density, flowability, chemical composition, and crystalline phases. The following thesis examines, through a literature review, the main technique used for the production of metal powders intended for additive manufacturing—atomization—describing in more detail the most common variants: water, gas, and plasma atomization. Subsequently, the fundamental parameters that determine powder quality and the techniques commonly used for their characterization are explored.
La manifattura additiva, Additive Manufacturing (AM), rappresenta una tecnologia produttiva innovativa che, attraverso la deposizione del materiale strato per strato (Layer-by-Layer), consente la realizzazione di componenti con geometrie complesse e una riduzione significativa degli sprechi di materiale. Nei processi basati sul letto di polvere, come DED e EBM, la qualità del processo e del componente finale dipende fortemente dalla polvere impiegata e dalle sue caratteristiche chiave come la morfologia, la distribuzione granulometrica, la densità, la scorrevolezza, la composizione chimica e le fasi cristalline. La seguente tesi esamina, attraverso una ricerca bibliografica, la principale tecnica impiegata per la produzione delle polveri metalliche destinate alla manifattura additiva, ovvero l’atomizzazione, descrivendone più in dettaglio le varianti più diffuse: atomizzazione ad acqua, a gas e al plasma. Successivamente vengono approfonditi i parametri fondamentali che determinano la qualità delle polveri e le tecniche comunemente utilizzate per la loro caratterizzazione.
