This thesis reconstructs and analyzes the evolution of relations between Italy and Romania throughout the Cold War (1945-1989). Starting from the historical roots of the relationship and the challenging years of Sovietization, the study highlights how Italy succeeded in carving out a unique role in its dialogue with Bucharest, leveraging Romania's relative foreign policy autonomy from the Soviet Union. Based on the analysis of often unpublished primary sources from the Historical Diplomatic Archive of the Italian Presidency, the research traces the fundamental stages of the bilateral relationship: from the phase of normalization and political-cultural rapprochement in the 1960s to the period of intense detente in the 1970s, which culminated in Nicolae Ceaușescu's historic state visit to Italy in 1973. Finally, the work examines the progressive deterioration of relations during the 1980s, marked by the Romanian economic crisis, the regime's growing isolation, and Italian concerns regarding the human rights situation. The thesis emphasizes the ability of Italian diplomacy to exploit the spaces within the bipolar logic to promote cooperation, regional stability, and openness toward Eastern Europe.

Abstract
The thesis emphasizes the ability of Italian diplomacy to exploit the spaces within the bipolar logic to promote cooperation, regional stability, and openness toward Eastern Europe.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
