Potere, riforma e dissoluzione: l'Unione Sovietica di Michail S. Gorbačëv

The thesis aims to illustrate the reform process that took place in the Soviet Union, focusing on the 1980s and the leadership of CPSU General Secretary Mikhail S. Gorbačëv (1985-1991). The first chapter explores the historical context that led to the rise of the Soviet leader, emphasizing the origins of his political thought and the economic stagnation that featured the country. The second and third chapters examine Uskorenie and Perestroika, Glasnost and Soviet foreign policy, that are the four key elements of the restructuring process of the Soviet system. The fourth chapter offers an in-depth analysis of the international relations of the country, focusing on the Third World and the fall of the Eastern European states, with an analysis of the leadership's behavior in the face of the evolution of the international system. The fifth chapter describes the final phase of Gorbačëv's term and the collapse of the USSR, as well as examining, through the analysis of two Italian and US newspaper articles, the coup that led to the resignation of the Soviet leader. In conclusion, the final paper aims to provide a critical assessment of the changes that the leadership wanted to implement, while examining the actual results that the internal social and political context, first favorable and then adverse, allowed to be implemented.

La tesi ha l'obiettivo di illustrare il processo di riforma avvenuto nell'Unione Sovietica, concentrandosi sugli anni Ottanta e sulla leadership del Segretario Generale del PCUS Michail S. Gorbačëv (1985-1991). Nel primo capitolo viene approfondito il contesto storico che ha portato all'ascesa del leader sovietico, mettendone in risalto le origini del Pensiero Politico e la situazione di stagnazione economica del paese. Il secondo e il terzo capitolo approfondiscono rispettivamente Uskorenie e Perestrojka, Glasnost e politica estera sovietica, i quattro elementi cardine del processo di ristrutturazione del sistema sovietico. Il quarto capitolo propone un approfondimento delle relazioni internazionali del paese, concentrandosi sul Terzo Mondo e sulla caduta degli stati dell'Europa orientale, con un'analisi sul comportamento della leadership davanti all'evoluzione del sistema internazionale. Il quinto nonché ultimo capitolo descrive la fase finale del mandato di Gorbačëv e il crollo dell'URSS, oltre ad approfondire, mediante l'analisi di due articoli giornalistici italiano e statunitense, il colpo di stato che ha portato alle dimissioni del leader sovietico. Per concludere, l'elaborato finale si prepone di conferire una valutazione critica sui cambiamenti che la leadership volle attuare, esaminando allo stesso tempo gli effettivi risultati che il contesto sociale e politico interno, prima a favore e poi avverso, ha permesso di attuare.
