This thesis examines the theme of diversity and the representation of Black people in children’s literature published in Italy between 2020 and 2025, with a particular focus on picturebooks. Drawing on a theoretical framework that integrates children’s literature studies, intercultural pedagogy, and theories of representation, the study explores the role of books as cultural devices capable of shaping the imagination, processes of recognition, and relationships with others from early childhood. Through the development of a critical mapping and the design of an analytical framework, the thesis analyses a selected corpus of picturebooks available on the Italian publishing market. The analysis focuses on the modes of representation of Black people, considering text, image, and paratext in an integrated manner, and highlights trends, variations, and narrative and iconographic choices that characterise the contemporary Italian publishing landscape. The study aims to serve as a tool for critical reflection and guidance for teachers, educators, and librarians, emphasising the educational potential of children’s literature in promoting inclusion, awareness, and a plurality of perspectives, as well as the cultural responsibility of contemporary publishing practices.
