Relic Pinus sylvestris L. (Ps) stands in the emilian Apennines appear differently in respect to most stands located in the alps or in continental Europe. In this context, at the limit of the species’ natural range, Ps fully assumes the role of pioneer species, only being able to establish itself in locations affected by severe disturbances or soil degradation, where other species are less competitive. In this pilot study we analyzed stand composition, under-canopy vegetation and renovation in two Ps stands between the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. We were able to confirm the presence of Ps’ renovation(Q1), and we tried to establish which factors are most correlated with its presence (Q2). Starting with field-collected data we calculated relevant stand parameters and presented all findings with numerous graphs and tables. By comparing our results with scientific literature, we provided interpretations of the situations analyzed and laid the groundwork for future studies. Further research is needed, for this reason 8 research questions (Q4) have been formulated with the aim of directing future studies towards a better understanding of climate change (CC) impacts on Emilian Ps stands, and to clarify future prospects regarding the presence and use of Ps in the Apennines.

Abstract
Further research is needed, for this reason 8 research questions (Q4) have been formulated with the aim of directing future studies towards a better understanding of climate change (CC) impacts on Emilian Ps stands, and to clarify future prospects regarding the presence and use of Ps in the Apennines.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
