“La lingua come relazione: il ruolo della socializzazione linguistica nelle dinamiche familiari in contesto migratorio”

This thesis investigates the role of linguistic socialization within migrant families, with the aim of understanding how the bidirectionality of linguistic socialization influences family dynamics. The research focuses on the relationship between parents and children and takes the latter’s point of view as a priority. The question that guides the research is whether and how the bidirectionality of linguistic socialization, in families with a migrant background, affects relationships within the family. The theoretical framework of the thesis explores the concept of linguistic socialization, the role of language as cultural, identity and integration tool and the phenomenon of language brokering. These elements are put in relation to the phenomenon of migration in Italy and to second generations, with a focus on the family dimension of migration and the transition to parenthood for migrant couples. A qualitative research was conducted starting from these theoretical foundations to explore, through interviews, the experience of linguistic mediation among the children of migrant couples, with the aim of exploring their role in linguistic socialization processes and the influence of these dynamics on family relationships.

La presente tesi indaga il ruolo della socializzazione linguistica all’interno delle famiglie con background migratorio con l’obiettivo di comprendere come la bidirezionalità della socializzazione influenzi le dinamiche familiari. La ricerca si concentra sul rapporto tra genitori e figli e assume come privilegiato il punto di vista di questi ultimi. La domanda di ricerca che guida la tesi è se e come la bidirezionalità della socializzazione linguistica, nelle famiglie con background migratorio, influisce nei rapporti interni alla famiglia. Il quadro teorico in cui si inserisce la tesi approfondisce il concetto di socializzazione linguistica, il ruolo della lingua come strumento culturale, identitario e di integrazione e il fenomeno del language brokering. Tali elementi vengono relazionati al fenomeno migratorio in Italia e alle seconde generazioni, soffermandosi inoltre sulla dimensione familiare della migrazione e sulla transizione alla genitorialità per le coppie migranti. A partire da queste basi teoriche è stata condotta la ricerca qualitativa per approfondire, tramite interviste, l’esperienza della mediazione linguistica dei figli di coppie migranti, con l’obiettivo di esplorare il loro ruolo nei processi di socializzazione linguistica e l’influenza di tali dinamiche sulle relazioni familiari.
