Il matrimonio in Europa tra Ottocento e Novecento: il ruolo del matrimonio in “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” di Jane Austen e “Due” di Irène Némirovsky

My thesis aims to investigate the value of marriage in European society between the 19th and 20th centuries, analysing how this aspect fits into the literary production of the period. The aim is to highlight how the value that society attributes to marriage changes over time, faithfully reflecting the radical changes that have taken place in society itself with the advent of modernity. Within the two novels examined, the theme of marriage can be addressed from different points of view that reflect the society and the time in which the novels are set. In Jane Austen's “Pride and Prejudice”, there is a clear, almost obsessive focus on the economic and social aspects of marriage, even though the protagonist opposes this, wishing to marry for love. In Iréne Némirovsky's “Two”, on the contrary, marriage seems to lose much of the importance attributed to it by nineteenth-century society, becoming a constraint from which many young people, survivors of the First World War, prefer to distance themselves in favour of less binding relationships. Starting with a historical and cultural overview, and then moving on to the analysis of two novels that present marriage as the cornerstone of the entire narrative, we will outline the close relationship between marriage and society and the expectations that it imposes on individuals.

Il mio lavoro di tesi mira ad indagare il valore del matrimonio nella società europea tra il XIX e il XX secolo, analizzando come questo aspetto si inserisca nella produzione letteraria del periodo. Lo scopo è quello di mettere in evidenza come il valore che la società attribuisce al matrimonio cambi nel corso del tempo, rispecchiando in modo fedele i mutamenti radicali avvenuti nella società stessa con l’avvento della modernità. All’interno dei due romanzi presi in esame, il tema del matrimonio può essere affrontato partendo da diversi punti di vista che rispecchiano la società e il tempo nei quali i romanzi sono inseriti. In “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” di Jane Austen è evidente l’attenzione quasi ossessiva all’aspetto economico e sociale del matrimonio, sebbene la protagonista vi si opponga, con il desiderio di sposarsi per amore. Nel romanzo “Due” di Iréne Némirovsky, al contrario, il matrimonio sembra perdere gran parte dell’importanza attribuitagli dalla società ottocentesca, trasformandosi in un vincolo dal quale molti giovani, sopravvissuti agli orrori della prima guerra mondiale, preferiscono allontanarsi in favore di rapporti meno vincolanti. A partire dunque da una panoramica storica e culturale, per poi passare attraverso l’analisi di due romanzi che presentano il matrimonio come cardine dell’intera narrazione, si arriverà a delineare lo stretto rapporto che lega il matrimonio alla società e alle aspettative che essa impone sui singoli.
