The following paper’s aim is to outline the correlation between the Spanish colonial history and the 20th-century Mexican literature, particularly focusing on the aspect of identity research, which is closely linked to the social, cultural, ethnic and political dimensions of the country. The graduation thesis begins with the analysis of the social, cultural and political dynamics which affected the country in the 20th century, period characterized by cultural fervor and an important boost towards the valorization of the indigenous matter. In addition, the focus shifts to the complex issue of the Mexican population's search for a national identity, which is deeply linked to its mestizo past, resulting from the encounter between the Aztec empire and the Spanish. Furthermore, the concept of indigenism is examined: a political and cultural movement that emerged in the 20th century, aimed at integrating indigenous populations into the modern nation. The following chapter focuses on the critical reflection on the theme of identity by 20th-century Mexican writers, in particular Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes. The thesis proceeds with the final chapter, which delves into the controversial figure of La Malinche, interpreter and lover of Hernán Cortés, who is considered by some as the original traitor of her people and by others as the symbol of cultural hybridization.
