This thesis explores the complexities of intersectionality and feminism through the prose and legacy of Audre Lorde, one of the most influential voices in Black feminist thought. The first chapter briefly traces the historical development of feminist theory, as well as the rise of intersectionality as a critical framework for recognizing overlapping forms of oppression related to race, gender, and sexuality, among others. Then, the attention shifts to Lorde’s life and literary production, and to the translation and reception of her works in Italy. Finally, the third chapter offers a careful analysis of two of Lorde’s most significant prose works, Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches and Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. Through them, the thesis highlights key themes in the author’s thought, such as difference, self-definition, survival, and the potential of the erotic. To conclude, is presented an overview of the main criticism of Lorde and intersectionality, followed by the analysis of one of the author’s most well-known poems, “A Litany for Survival.” Ultimately, this study argues that Lorde’s production provides a scathing social critique that remains relevant even today, challenging the dominant power in a fight against social injustice, and promoting a vision of solidarity rooted in the appreciation of intersecting identities.
A New Spelling of My Name.
