The transition to sustainable mobility is a complex challenge that goes beyond technological innovation and urban planning, also involving the psychological and cognitive processes that drive individual decisions. Changing mobility patterns requires a broader understanding of the mechanisms that underpin habit and perception, despite growing awareness of environmental issues. This study uses established psychological theories such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), cognitive biases related to the status quo, and subjective perceptions of environmental risk to examine these dynamics. An empirical survey was conducted on a sample of people residing in Sicily, living in the provinces of Catania, Enna, Messina, Syracuse, and Ragusa, cities characterized by heavy dependence on private cars, inadequate infrastructure, and territorial inequalities. The research uses a questionnaire to examine the role of socio-demographic and psychological factors in mobility decisions, assessing environmental perceptions and willingness to adopt technological solutions. The aim is to identify the main obstacles and levers to encourage people to change their attitudes towards more inclusive and sustainable mobility practices in Sicily.
La transizione verso una mobilità sostenibile è una sfida complessa che va oltre l'innovazione tecnologica e la pianificazione urbana, coinvolgendo anche i processi psicologici e cognitivi che guidano le decisioni individuali. Il cambiamento dei modelli di mobilità richiede una comprensione più ampia dei meccanismi che sostengono l'abitudine e la percezione, nonostante la crescente consapevolezza dei problemi ambientali. In questo studio vengono utilizzate teorie psicologiche consolidate come il modello di accettazione tecnologica (TAM), i bias cognitivi relativi allo status quo e la percezione soggettiva del rischio ambientale per esaminare tali dinamiche. Un'indagine empirica è stata condotta su un campione di persone residenti in Sicilia, che vivono nelle province di Catania, Enna, Messina, Siracusa e Ragusa, città caratterizzate da una forte dipendenza dall'auto privata, infrastrutture inadeguate e disuguaglianze territoriali. La ricerca utilizza un questionario per esaminare il ruolo dei fattori socio-demografici e psicologici nelle decisioni di mobilità, valutando le percezioni ambientali e la disponibilità a soluzioni tecnologiche. L'obiettivo è identificare i principali ostacoli e quali leve spingano le persone a cambiare atteggiamento verso pratiche di mobilità più inclusive e sostenibili nel territorio siciliano.
