Progetto e tecniche costruttive nell’architettura della Congregazione cassinese: i cantieri del monastero di Santa Giustina a Padova nei secoli XV-XVI

The analysis of continuity in the architecture of the Cassinese Benedictine Congregation is a field of research that emerged over thirty years ago and is now being further explored through a cross-disciplinary approach by the “CoenoBIuM” project (PRIN 2022). This work contributes to the study of Cassinese architecture through the lens of design dynamics together with building campaigns development and the building techniques employed in the abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua. To date, studies on this subject have been restricted to architectural, artistic, liturgical, and, to some extent, economic scopes. The question that arises is whether or not a specific Cassinese construction praxis exists alongside a Cassinese architectural language, particularly regarding the Congregation's monasteries. e theme of their respective churches has been kept in the background, as they have already been extensively studied. To address this issue, existing studies must be partly reinterpreted from a different perspective, a constructive one, and partly expanded with new analyses of the construction techniques found in Cassinese monasteries. Therefore, the starting point chosen was the mother abbey of the Congregation, Santa Giustina in Padua, so that future studies may approach other monasteries from the same perspective and create a framework for comparison. Such a comparison can be enhanced through digital tools, specifically leveraging the data-rich and classifcatory features of BIM (Building Information Modelling). The direction set by this research thus constitutes only an initial step towards answering the question of the existence of a Cassinese “way of building”, which must be analyzed through a comparative approach, including additional case studies that will be partially cited and compared herein.

L'analisi delle continuità nell'architettura della Congregazione benedettina cassinese è un ambito di ricerca sviluppatosi ormai più di trent'anni fa e che oggi viene approfondito con un approccio trasversale dal progetto “CoenoBIuM” (PRIN 2022). Questo lavoro si inserisce nel tema dell’architettura cassinese attraverso la trattazione delle dinamiche progettuali congiuntamente allo sviluppo dei cantieri e alle tecniche costruttive utilizzate nell’abbazia di Santa Giustina a Padova. Sino ad ora gli studi sull’argomento sono stati ristretti ad ambiti architettonici, artistici e liturgici. La domanda che ci si pone è se esista o meno una prassi costruttiva cassinese, oltre ad un linguaggio architettonico cassinese, in particolare per quanto riguarda i monasteri della Congregazione, mentre il tema delle relative chiese si è mantenuto in secondo piano, essendo esse già state molto studiate. Per affrontare questo problema, è necessario che gli studi elaborati sull’argomento vadano in parte riletti secondo un’altra ottica, quella costruttiva, e in parte ampliati con nuove analisi sulle tecniche costruttive riscontrabili nei monasteri cassinesi. Perciò, si è voluto ripartire dall'abbazia matrice della Congregazione, quella di Santa Giustina di Padova, affinché i prossimi studi possano affrontare altri monasteri secondo il medesimo punto di vista e creare un panorama nel quale essi si possano confrontare. Tale raffronto potrà essere facilitato grazie all’uso degli strumenti digitali, in particolare grazie al carattere classificatorio e informativo del BIM (Building Information Modelling). La direzione indicata da questa ricerca costituisce quindi solo un primo tassello di risposta all’interrogativo sull’esistenza di un “costruire” cassinese, che dovrà essere analizzato sotto una prospettiva comparativa, comprendendo anche altri casi studio, i quali verranno in parte qui citati e confrontati.
