This thesis explores the construct of compassion with the aim of understanding its psychological meaning and its role in emotional regulation processes and in individual and social well-being. The first part examines affiliative behaviors and responses to suffering, focusing on the distinction between empathy and compassion and on the concept of self-compassion. The second part provides a historical and theoretical overview of the construct, outlining the main definitions and reference models developed within psychological literature. The final part presents a review of empirical evidence on compassion-based interventions and their applications in clinical settings and in the promotion of well-being. Overall, the thesis highlights compassion as a fundamental psychological resource that can be developed and cultivated to enhance personal well-being and the quality of relationships.
La presente tesi esplora il costrutto di compassione con l’obiettivo di comprenderne il significato psicologico e il ruolo nei processi di regolazione emotiva e nel benessere individuale e sociale. Nella prima parte viene analizzato il tema dei comportamenti affiliativi e delle risposte alla sofferenza, soffermandosi sulle differenze tra empatia e compassione e sul concetto di autocompassione. La seconda parte propone un inquadramento storico e teorico del costrutto, mettendo in luce le principali definizioni e i modelli di riferimento sviluppati nella letteratura psicologica. Infine, la tesi presenta una rassegna delle evidenze empiriche sugli interventi basati sulla compassione e sulle loro applicazioni in ambito clinico e nella promozione del benessere. Nel complesso, il lavoro evidenzia la compassione come una risorsa psicologica fondamentale, che può essere sviluppata e coltivata per favorire il benessere personale e la qualità delle relazioni.
