Orthognathic surgery for the correction of Class III malocclusion represents a complex clinical pathway that involves not only the morphological and functional dimensions of the face, but also the patient’s psychological and identity sphere. Anxiety, altered body perception, and difficulties in adaptation are common experiences throughout the surgical journey, making the nurse’s role essential as a key figure in providing psycho-emotional and relational support. This thesis is a literature review aimed at investigating the main scientific evidence regarding the nursing contribution in the care pathway of patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus databases, selecting articles published between 2000 and 2025 in English and Italian. From an initial pool of 127 studies, 60 articles met the inclusion criteria and were qualitatively analyzed using a thematic approach. Three main areas emerged from the analysis: patients’ emotional responses, nursing support strategies and therapeutic communication, and the impact of nursing on body image reprocessing. The studies confirm the effectiveness of nursing support in reducing anxiety, improving self-esteem, and fostering trust in the care process (Findik et al., 2022; McCance & McCormack, 2021). The limitations of this review include the secondary nature of the sources, methodological heterogeneity, and the inclusion of a single reflective personal experience, which is not generalizable but useful in integrating the theoretical dimension with the lived experience. The thesis highlights how nursing grounded in empathy and therapeutic communication represents an essential component of care in maxillofacial surgery, supporting patients through a transformative journey that leads from distress to trust and to the rediscovery of the self.
