In this thesis, the relationship between media-induced derealization and the concept of truth will be examined through the death of God in Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought. This relationship will be discussed across the evolution of media over time: from the radio and television of the last century, to contemporary social media and algorithmic models. The aim of the thesis is to reinterpret, through Nietzschean categories, the development of new technologies as an erosion of the monolithic conception of truth, from which a new opportunity for the creation of new values, compatible with the development of the digital environment, may emerge. The first chapter, devoted to Nietzsche’s philosophy, will lay the groundwork for interpreting the pluralization of perspectives within the media sphere. It will address the crisis of truth understood as a dogmatic and absolute principle through an analysis of the death of God in The Gay Science and the emancipatory potential of the transvaluation of values. The second chapter will focus on Theodor W. Adorno’s critique of mass media and the culture industry. After outlining the theoretical foundations of his thought, his aesthetic and cultural reflections will be analyzed in light of negative dialectics. Finally, the thesis will address contemporary communication technologies and their social consequences through the works of Byung-Chul Han and Luciano Floridi. It will be shown that, whereas for Han the use of social media necessarily entails a degradation of the subject’s experience in contemporary society, for Floridi the future trajectory of the digital environment will depend solely on humanity, which bears full responsibility for how it chooses to employ new technologies.
