This thesis examines the symbolism of the goat, exploring its presence in the works of Marc Chagall and Isaac Bashevis Singer. The first chapter explores the goat in mythological and religious imagery, as well as in the theories of René Girard. The second chapter traces the representation of the animal throughout art history, with a particular focus on the paintings of Marc Chagall. The third chapter follows the same approach in the literary sphere, before turning its attention to the works of Isaac Bashevis Singer.
