This thesis explores the transformation of the female figure in the Germanic and Old Norse tradition through the case of Brunhild. Its aim is to examine how her representation changes from the Nordic mythological and poetic tradition to the medieval reworking found in the Nibelungenlied, highlighting the relationship between cultural context and the construction of female subjectivity. The study shows how, in the Old Norse tradition, Brynhildr is portrayed as a figure marked by autonomy and agency, whereas in the medieval version her independence is gradually reduced and reshaped according to stricter models associated with courtly culture and Christian morality. The comparison between the two traditions reveals a significant transformation in the representation of women and suggests that history does not move in a simple or progressive direction, as forms of autonomy and restriction continue to alternate over time. Brunhild thus emerges not only as a figure of the heroic tradition, but also as a way of reflecting on female subjectivity between myth and the contemporary world.

Abstract
Brunhild thus emerges not only as a figure of the heroic tradition, but also as a way of reflecting on female subjectivity between myth and the contemporary world.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
