The Double Face of Magic: Witches and Cunning Folk in Early Modern England, the Tension between Prosecution and Tolerance

This dissertation focuses on the cultural and social disparities between Witches and Cunning Folk in Early Modern England, expressed through the print culture. Pamphlets, treatises as well as famous theological and legal writings are all part of a bigger set of widespread beliefs that were crucial as well as fundamental in the everyday life of the period. The occult was embedded in the social tissue, as a result there were some 'magical' activities and practitioners that were highly tolerated, if not directly advised, and others that suffered extensive prosecution, tortures and death rows. This dissertation is going to explore this phenomenon from a number of different angles, namely: the popular beliefs, theology, law, and ultimately gender.

Questa tesi si concentra sulle disparità culturali e sociali tra le streghe e i cunning folk nell’Inghilterra della Prima Età Moderna, così come emergono attraverso la cultura della stampa. Pamphlet, trattati e celebri scritti teologici e giuridici fanno tutti parte di un più ampio insieme di credenze diffuse, cruciali e fondamentali nella vita quotidiana dell’epoca. L’occulto era profondamente radicato nel tessuto sociale e, di conseguenza, alcune attività e figure “magiche” erano ampiamente tollerate, se non addirittura consigliate, mentre altre subirono persecuzioni estensive, torture e condanne a morte. Questa tesi intende esplorare tale fenomeno da diverse prospettive, in particolare: le credenze popolari, la teologia, il diritto e, infine, il genere.
