This dissertation analyzes the Swedish welfare state, focusing on the relationship between public spending, social outcomes, and the system's overall efficiency. After examining the concept of welfare, its historical evolution, and the main existing models, the thesis delves into the Nordic model, with particular reference to the Swedish welfare state. The analysis addresses the high level of citizen funding required to meet substantial public spending. Specifically, it focuses on social policies related to healthcare, the labor market, and education, using economic and social data. The study highlights how the Swedish welfare system has recently been experiencing significant challenges. The research findings show that the Swedish welfare state remains among the most advanced in the world, even after a recent downsizing. However, issues such as integration difficulties and demographic aging are challenging the sustainability of such generous public spending.
