Inter-Korean relations and the theme of unification from 1990 to 2007

This thesis will begin with a brief explanation of the approach used regarding the use of the Korean language and will then discuss bilateral relations between the Republic of Korea (ROK) (South Korea) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) (North Korea) in the period from 1990 to 2007. The dialogue will be reconstructed from a historical perspective, with particular attention paid to political, military, and economic aspects. Events during which the various changes (rapprochement or divergence) between the two nations become apparent will be highlighted. The common thread of the story is the unification of the two Koreas, accompanied by the advancements of joint projects and the symbols of a unified Korea.

La presente tesi inizierà con una breve illustrazione dell’approccio adottato riguardo l’uso della lingua coreana, passando poi ad analizzare le relazioni bilaterali tra la Repubblica di Corea (ROK) (Corea del Sud) e la Repubblica Popolare Democratica di Corea (DPRK) (Corea del Nord) nel periodo compreso tra il 1990 e il 2007. Il dialogo verrà ricostruito da una prospettiva storica, prestando particolare attenzione agli aspetti politici, militari ed economici. Verranno evidenziati gli eventi durante i quali si manifestano i vari cambiamenti (avvicinamento o divergenza) tra le due nazioni. Il filo conduttore della narrazione è l'unificazione delle due Coree, accompagnata dai progressi dei progetti comuni e dai simboli di una Corea unificata.
