This thesis falls within the field of education in healthcare settings, exploring the effects of pediatric oncohematological diseases and their treatments on cognitive functioning and school reintegration among children and young adolescents. The research begins with the observation that cancer and its treatments can significantly impact attention, memory, and executive functions, with potential repercussions on learning and well-being in school. The aim of this study is to investigate these cognitive effects and understand their educational and instructional implications, with particular reference to the phase of returning to school. The research hypothesis is that the cognitive difficulties associated with the course of treatment may affect academic performance and adaptation to classroom life, necessitating personalized educational interventions. The research is designed as an exploratory empirical study. The cognitive performance of young patients was analyzed at different stages of their illness, using standardized tools for assessing cognitive abilities and a longitudinal comparison of the results. The results highlight difficulties in attention, working memory, and executive functions, with potential implications for academic performance. These findings underscore the importance of a multidisciplinary approach based on collaboration between schools, families, and healthcare professionals, as well as the role of hospital-based schooling and home schooling in ensuring educational continuity and well-being.
