Pediatric pain is not merely a physical symptom, but a complex experience involving the child’s emotions, thoughts, and behavior. It represents more than just a biological signal of damage, but rather a subjective experience that reflects the patient’s relational history and personal background. In the context of onco-hematological diseases, pain is part of a framework of profound stress that involves the entire family unit. The diagnosis and the treatment journey impose an abrupt interruption of daily life, distancing the young patient from their school routine and their peers. Scientific literature highlights how educational continuity and maintaining the link with school are decisive factors for the outcome of the therapeutic process: offering a pedagogical perspective means helping the child not to identify exclusively with their illness, fostering a projection toward the future that reduces the focus on present pain. In this scenario, the child is called to direct their resources through the adoption of coping strategies, namely the set of cognitive and behavioral efforts aimed at managing specific demands during acute moments related to the pathology. The present study aims to analyze the adaptation methods and coping strategies implemented by pediatric patients suffering from onco-hematological diseases during the period of hospitalization. The research was conducted involving pediatric patients with a diagnosis of onco-hematological neoplasm, followed at the Pediatric Onco-hematology Clinic of the Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova
Il dolore pediatrico non è solo un sintomo fisico, ma un’esperienza complessa che coinvolge le emozioni, il pensiero e il comportamento del bambino. Non rappresenta solo un segnale biologico di danno, ma un’esperienza soggettiva che riflette la storia relazionale e il vissuto del paziente. Nel contesto delle malattie oncoematologiche, il dolore si inserisce in un quadro di stress profondo che coinvolge l’intero nucleo familiare. La diagnosi e il percorso di cura impongono infatti una brusca interruzione della quotidianità, allontanando il piccolo paziente dalla routine scolastica e dai suoi pari. La letteratura scientifica evidenzia come la continuità educativa e il mantenimento del legame con la scuola siano fattori determinanti per l'esito del percorso terapeutico: offrire una prospettiva pedagogica significa aiutare il bambino a non identificarsi esclusivamente con la propria malattia, favorendo una proiezione verso il futuro che riduca l’attenzione sul dolore presente. In questo scenario, il bambino è chiamato a indirizzare le proprie risorse attraverso l’adozione di strategie di coping ovvero l'insieme di sforzi cognitivi e comportamentali volti a gestire le richieste specifiche nei momenti acuti connessi alla patologia. Il presente studio si pone l'obiettivo di analizzare le modalità di adattamento e le strategie di coping messe in atto dai pazienti pediatrici affetti da malattie oncoematologiche durante il periodo di ospedalizzazione. La ricerca è stata condotta coinvolgendo pazienti in età pediatrica con diagnosi di neoplasia oncoematologica, seguiti presso la Clinica di Oncoematologia Pediatrica dell'Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova.
