It is known that premature births constitute a serious health problem in the world today, becoming one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in babies. As the scientific community becomes interested in studying the impact of nutrition, such as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, on the outcome of pregnancy, this thesis aims to examine omega-3 fatty acids in relation to preterm births and fetal brain development. This research provides a summary of the available evidence on maternal omega-3 intake, focusing specifically on EPA and DHA from the observational, intervention, and meta-analysis data. The correlation between those fats and gestational duration and neurodevelopmental outcomes has been analyzed. The data shows that the consumption of sufficient quantities of omega-3 acids is capable of reducing the risk of early delivery because of its effect on anti-inflammatory pathways, prostaglandin formation, and placenta function. Moreover, DHA has an essential structural importance regarding fetal brain and retina development during the third trimester period when brain development takes place intensively. Sufficient prenatal intake of DHA is linked to positive cognitive, visual, and behavioral developmental outcomes. However, the literature also brings attention to the variations in research due to different dosages, the time when supplementation is taken, dietary intake prior to supplementation, and demographics. Even though omega-3 fatty acids have exhibited potential in the benefits they offer, the exact clinical recommendations on how to implement them are still being researched. In conclusion, this thesis suggests that omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in gestational length and neural development of the baby, yet more research needs to be done before any final conclusion can be made.
