Monilinia spp. and Botrytis cinerea are considered among the most harmful post-harvest pathogens. They are the causal agents of brown rot and gray mold respectively, two pathologies that mainly attack drupaceae and pomaceae causing significant economic losses. Their control is based on the use of fungicidal products although, due to growing concerns about their environmental impact, potential risks to consumer health and the possible development of new strains resistant to the active ingredients, there are increasing attempts to reduce their use. To this end, the European Union, with the objectives enshrined in the Green Deal, has set itself the goal of reducing the use of synthetic pesticides by 2030. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of three volatile compounds of natural origin, 2-phenylethanol, linalool and β-cyclocitral, against B. cinerea, M. laxa, M. fructigena and M. polystroma in controlled air volume systems. Efficacy is tested by evaluating mycelial growth in vitro and damage in vivo on apple. In vitro tests revealed a strong sensitivity of all tested fungal species to the products used which were shown to have a direct effect on these pathogens; in vivo they did not result in a statistically significant reduction in disease development under the experimental conditions adopted.
.Monilinia spp. e Botrytis cinerea sono considerati tra i patogeni più dannosi in fase di post-raccolta. Sono gli agenti causali rispettivamente del marciume bruno e della muffa grigia, due patologie che attaccano principalmente drupaceae e pomaceae causando perdite di rilevanza economica. Il controllo, ad oggi, è basato sull’utilizzo di prodotti fungicidi anche se, a causa della crescente preoccupazione sul loro impatto ambientale, i potenziali rischi sulla salute dei consumatori e il possibile sviluppo di nuovi ceppi resistenti ai principi attivi, si sta cercando sempre più di ridurne l’utilizzo. A tal fine l’Unione Europea, con gli obiettivi sanciti nel Green Deal, si è prefissata la riduzione dell’uso di pesticidi sintetici entro il 2030. Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di valutare l’efficacia di tre composti volatili di origine naturale, 2-feniletanolo, linalolo e β-ciclocitrale, nei confronti di B. cinerea, M. laxa, M. fructigena e M. polystroma in sistemi a volume d’aria controllato. L’efficacia è testata in valutando la crescita miceliare in vitro e del danno in vivo su mela. Dalle prove in vitro è risultata una forte sensibilità da parte di tutte le specie fungine testate ai prodotti utilizzati i quali hanno dimostrato di possedere un effetto diretto su questi patogeni; in vivo non hanno determinato una riduzione statisticamente significativa dello sviluppo della malattia nelle condizioni sperimentali adottate.
