European agriculture is currently facing growing challenges related to climate change, rising fertilizer costs, and the need to reduce nitrate pollution in water. In this context, the search for alternatives to traditional nitrogen fertilization has become a priority, for both environmental and economic reasons. Biostimulants based on nitrogen-fixing bacteria represent a promising tool, as they are capable of improving the nutritional efficiency of crops while reducing chemical inputs. This thesis fits into this scenario, evaluating the effectiveness of the Corteva Agriscience's BlueN product, based on Methylobacterium symbioticum strain SB23, as a tool to optimize nitrogen fertilization in maize while reducing its environmental impact. The trial was conducted on the hybrid maize P0937 (Corteva Agriscience) in the municipality of Borgo Veneto (Padova) during 2024, comparing six treatments: three with traditional nitrogen fertilization with urea (U, at 200 and 260 kg N/ha) or organic with liquid digestate (D, at 200 kg N/ha), each combined with or without foliar application of BlueN biostimulant at the label dose of 333 g/ha, applied between the sixth and eighth leaf stage of maize. The application of BlueN resulted in a significant increase in leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD index) across all treatments, with increments of up to 24% in the 200 (D) + BlueN treatment and 20% in the 200 (U) + BlueN treatment, compared to their respective controls, confirming a prolonged stay-green effect in treated plants. In terms of grain yield, the most relevant and statistically significant effect was observed in the 200 (U) + BlueN treatment, with a 10% increase compared to the control (16.4 vs. 14.9 t/ha), while with digestate in the 200 (D) + BlueN treatment the increase was 7% (15.6 vs. 14.6 t/ha) and in the 260 (U) + BlueN treatment only 1% (16.1 vs. 15.9 t/ha). On the qualitative side, a significant reduction in total fumonisins was recorded in the treatments with BlueN, with decreases of 79% in the 200 (D) + BlueN treatment and 96% in the 260 (U) + 8 BlueN, while proteins, oil and starch remained substantially unchanged across all the treatments. These results confirm the potential of Methylobacterium symbioticum as a tool to optimize nitrogen fertilization in maize, especially at moderate nitrogen doses, suggesting the opportunity to test its effectiveness under different climatic conditions, in combination with other organic fertilizers or under organic farming.
