This thesis investigates the organizational structure, operational characteristics, and mechanization level of logging enterprises operating in the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with reference to the year 2024. The study was carried out to provide an updated overview of the regional forestry sector and to compare the current situation with previous surveys conducted in 1996 and 2005, highlighting the main changes that have occurred over the last three decades. The analysis was based on administrative data collected from the Regional Forest Inspectorates concerning companies registered in the Regional Register of Forestry Enterprises. Information regarding legal status, business organization, workforce, machinery fleet, and mechanization level was collected and analyzed. The study also included data on timber marketed by the enterprises. The results show that the regional forestry sector is still largely composed of small, individually owned enterprises, mainly located in mountainous areas where forestry continues to represent an important economic activity. At the same time, the sector has experienced gradual technological development, demonstrated by the increasing adoption of specialized forest machinery such as cable yarders, processors, forwarders, and harvesters, although traditional harvesting systems based on chainsaws and tractors remain widespread. The analysis also highlights a significant increase in the number of registered forestry enterprises and a growing adoption of sustainable forest management and chain-of-custody certifications, reflecting the progressive professionalization and qualification of the sector. Overall, this study provides an updated description of the forestry enterprises operating in Friuli Venezia Giulia, documenting their structural and technological evolution and offering useful information to support future policies aimed at improving the competitiveness, sustainability, and development of the regional forest-wood supply chain.
Il presente lavoro analizza l'organizzazione, la struttura e il livello di meccanizzazione delle imprese boschive operanti nella Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, con riferimento all'anno 2024. Lo studio nasce dall'esigenza di aggiornare il quadro conoscitivo del settore forestale regionale, confrontando la situazione attuale con le precedenti indagini svolte nel 1996 e nel 2005, al fine di evidenziarne l'evoluzione nel corso degli ultimi trent'anni. L'indagine è stata condotta mediante l'analisi dei dati raccolti presso gli Ispettorati forestali regionali, relativi alle imprese iscritte all'Elenco regionale. Sono stati esaminati gli aspetti riguardanti la forma giuridica, l'organizzazione aziendale, il personale, il parco macchine e il livello di meccanizzazione delle imprese. L'analisi è stata integrata con i dati relativi ai quantitativi di legname commercializzato. I risultati evidenziano un comparto costituito prevalentemente da imprese individuali di piccole dimensioni, concentrate soprattutto nelle aree montane, dove l'attività forestale rappresenta ancora un'importante risorsa economica. Parallelamente emerge una parziale e progressiva evoluzione tecnologica, testimoniata dalla crescente diffusione di macchine specialistiche quali gru a cavo, processori, forwarder e harvester, pur permanendo una larga diffusione dei sistemi tradizionali basati sull'impiego di motosega e trattore. Lo studio evidenzia inoltre una significativa crescita del numero di imprese iscritte all'Elenco regionale e una maggiore diffusione delle certificazioni di gestione forestale e di catena di custodia, a conferma di un progressivo processo di qualificazione e professionalizzazione del settore. Nel complesso, il lavoro fornisce un quadro aggiornato delle caratteristiche delle imprese forestali regionali, mettendone in evidenza i principali cambiamenti strutturali e tecnologici e offrendo uno strumento utile per orientare future politiche di sviluppo, sostegno e innovazione della filiera bosco-legno del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
