Il culto di Vesta e l'ordine delle Vestali nella Roma antica

This paper examines the cult of Vesta and the order of the Vestal Virgins, one of the most significant religious institutions of ancient Rome. The first chapter explores the origins of the goddess Vesta, the central role of the Aedes Vestae and the House of the Vestals, and finally the importance of the sacred fire, a symbol of purity and of the stability of the state. The second chapter is devoted to an analysis of the order of the Vestal Virgins, with particular attention to the honors and privileges they enjoyed. Finally, the last chapter addresses the theme of crimen incesti, through an examination of the most famous historical trials, leading up to the gradual decline of the order of the Vestal Virgins. The aim of this paper is to highlight the symbolic, religious, and political importance of the Vestal Virgins.

Il presente elaborato analizza il culto di Vesta e l’ordine delle Vestali, una delle istituzioni religiose più significative dell’ antica Roma. Nel primo capitolo vengono approfondite le origini della dea Vesta, il ruolo centrale dell’ Aedes Vestae e della casa delle Vestali e infine l’importanza del fuoco sacro, simbolo di purezza e di stabilità dello stato. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato all’analisi dell’ordine delle Vestali, con particolare attenzione agli onori e privilegi di cui esse godevano. Infine, nell’ultimo capitolo viene approfondito il tema del crimen incesti, attraverso l’analisi dei processi storici più famosi, fino al progressivo decadimento dell’ordine delle Vestali. L'obiettivo dell’elaborato è quello di valorizzare l’importanza simbolica, religiosa e politica delle Vestali.
