The collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) is a medium-sized Neotropical ungulate that shows good adaptability to captive conditions, although management-related factors can significantly influence its health status. The aim of this case study is to evaluate the clinical management of an overweight captive collared peccary presenting with cardiomegaly, dyspnea, and secondary ascites. Particular attention is given to the development of a practical management strategy aimed at improving body condition and overall clinical status, taking into account the physiological constraints of the species and the presence of concurrent conditions. The study is based on observation, basic diagnostic data (including blood parameters), and continuous monitoring of the animal during the management period. Due to the limitations associated with handling an aggressive species, the approach relies primarily on clinical assessment and adaptive management rather than advanced diagnostics. The expected outcome is a gradual improvement in body condition, with a reduction of approximately 1–2 kg and increased activity levels, indicating the onset of a positive metabolic response. Alternatively, a limited response would suggest the need for further adjustment of management strategies. This work aims to provide a practical framework for the improvement of the management of this and similar cases in captive peccaries.
