This thesis examines the evolution of science communication models, critically analyzing the transition from the traditional "Deficit Model", based on a unidirectional and theoretical transmission of knowledge, to paradigms of Public Engagement, rooted in dialogue and active participation. Drawing upon historical evidence from the Bodmer Report (1985) and Brian Wynne's sociological research, the study demonstrates how basic scientific literacy is insufficient to address the complexity of contemporary ecological challenges. The core of the research focuses on the analysis of discussion games, which originated from European projects such as DECIDE and FUND, as tools for informal education. Specifically, it explores the case study "Where the wild beings are," developed by the University of Padua for the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC). By examining the structure of the game and the deliberative dynamics it triggers, the thesis investigates how this tool facilitates an understanding of biodiversity and the relationship between humans and nature, while promoting critical thinking and scientific citizenship. The dissertation compares the effectiveness of this approach with traditional frontal teaching, highlighting how role-playing and peer-to-peer discussion help participants overcome theoretical and emotional barriers. The results suggest that integrating participatory tools into the school curriculum not only enhances the learning of environmental issues but also concretely responds to the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, guaranteeing young people the right to actively participate in debates on scientific issues that will shape their future.
La presente tesi esamina l'evoluzione dei modelli di comunicazione della scienza, analizzando criticamente il passaggio dal tradizionale "Deficit Model", basato su una trasmissione unidirezionale e nozionistica del sapere, a paradigmi di Public Engagement, basati sul dialogo e sulla partecipazione attiva. Partendo dalle evidenze storiche fornite dal Rapporto Bodmer (1985) e dalle ricerche sociologiche di Brian Wynne, il lavoro dimostra come la semplice alfabetizzazione scientifica risulti insufficiente per affrontare la complessità delle sfide ecologiche contemporanee. Il fulcro della ricerca è l'analisi dei discussion game, nati nell'alveo di progetti europei come DECIDE e FUND, come strumenti di didattica informale. In particolare, viene approfondito il caso di studio "Where the wild beings are", sviluppato dall'Università di Padova per il National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC). Attraverso l'esame della struttura del gioco e delle dinamiche deliberative che esso innesca, la tesi indaga come questo strumento faciliti la comprensione della biodiversità e del rapporto tra essere umano e natura, promuovendo il pensiero critico e la cittadinanza scientifica. L'elaborato confronta l'efficacia di questo approccio rispetto alla didattica frontale, evidenziando come l'immedesimazione e il confronto paritario permettano di superare le barriere nozionistiche ed emotive dei partecipanti. I risultati suggeriscono che l'integrazione di strumenti partecipativi nel curriculum scolastico non solo migliori l'apprendimento dei temi ambientali, ma risponda concretamente ai principi della Convenzione ONU sui Diritti dell'Infanzia, garantendo ai giovani il diritto di partecipare attivamente al dibattito sulle questioni scientifiche che influenzeranno il loro futuro.
