This thesis develops the design of a prototype office building, to be built as part of the Valorlegno research project. The project, led by the ForestaOroVeneto regional innovation network, addresses various and critical issues related to wood valorization and the promotion of innovative solutions in the supply chain, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability. The primary objective of the research project, and consequently of this thesis, is to evaluate the structural characteristics and the economic and thermal-hygrometric comfort benefits of foundations made with wooden piles compared to traditional foundations for wooden buildings. The project is part of research and development in the local wood-based construction sector, and therefore also aims to explore and evaluate the economic and safety benefits of an approach based on modularity, prefabrication, and integrated design. The principle pursued is sustainability, in its environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The project was developed in direct collaboration with local wood producers, resulting in a digital twin of the building under construction, including the architectural model and structural and energy analytical models. The results will be compared with those derived from sensor surveys implemented in the building, as well as from static and dynamic structural tests performed on the actual building. In addition to the prototype building, the foundations of an integrated design system were developed, based on the principles of modularity and prefabrication. This should theoretically lead to reduced manufacturing costs, improved safety, and a reduction in production waste. The results show improved thermo-hygrometric comfort in terms of rising damp, significant cost savings when comparing the studied foundation system with an equivalent reinforced concrete one, structural characteristics that meet legal requirements, and a theoretical improvement in safety and cost reduction resulting from an integrated design approach. Some aspects regarding the durability of the foundation system remain to be evaluated, as well as the practical applicability of some results which were only theoretical at the time of writing this thesis.
