Non-symbolic numerical processing represents a capacity shared between humans and various animal species supported by phylogenetically ancient basic cognitive mechanisms. In this paper, particular interest is given to perceptual capacities that can support even very complex numerical discriminations. The present study investigates whether one-day-old domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) chicks show a spontaneous preference for numerical sets organised according to properties attributable to prime numbers, i.e. the impossibility of the latter to be broken down into subsets of equal number. Following a phase of habituation to groups of elements of both even and odd number, TOT subjects (TOT females) were subjected to a spontaneous choice test between two new number densities, a prime (7 or 11) and a composite one (9). The data analysis highlights that the chicks tend to spend a longer time observing the stimulus of prime number, regardless of whether it is the largest or the smallest one in the comparison. These results suggest that differences in the structural properties of numerical sets can influence behavior and the expression of a preference for specific configurations in chicks, supporting a role for perceptual mechanisms in the processing of numerical configurations.

Abstract
These results suggest that differences in the structural properties of numerical sets can influence behavior and the expression of a preference for specific configurations in chicks, supporting a role for perceptual mechanisms in the processing of numerical configurations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
