Athlete burnout is an increasingly widespread phenomenon in the world of sports and can affect athletes of all ages and competitive levels, with a particular incidence in high-pressure contexts such as professional sports. This chronic stress can have severe consequences on the mental and physical health of the individuals involved, compromising not only their athletic performance but also their general psychophysical well-being. For this reason, the present thesis aims to analyze athlete burnout in depth within the context of elite rugby, contributing further information on this phenomenon, particularly regarding its manifestation in a contact discipline and its potential interactions with gender and the type of sport practiced. Furthermore, recent studies have analyzed the relationship between athlete burnout and personality traits, suggesting that individual characteristics can serve as critical predictors of the syndrome (Gustafsson & Skoog, 2012). Despite the relevance of this topic, further studies are still needed to explore the link between personality traits and burnout in contexts characterized by high interdependence and physical impact, such as rugby. It was precisely an objective of this study to investigate this relationship and observe whether or not it reflects the results of research conducted in other sporting or organizational domains.
